Lángos, Hungarian specialty

Ingredients

  • 500g Flour
  • 300ml lukewarm water
  • 1 tbsp. tbsp dry baker's yeast
  • 1 tbsp. coffee Sugar (to activate the yeast)
  • 1 tbsp. coffee Salt
  • 2 tbsp. tbsp Vegetable oil (for the dough)
  • Oil for frying

Classic toppings (Optional):

  • Garlic cloves (to rub on hot bread)
  • Fresh cream
  • Grated cheese

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast: In a small bowl, mix the lukewarm water, sugar and dry yeast. Let sit for about 5 to 10 minutes until the mixture becomes foamy.
  2. Mix the dough: In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and the 2 tablespoons of oil.
  3. Knead: Mix by hand or with a mixer until you obtain a soft and slightly sticky dough. Knead for about 5 minutes until smooth.
  4. First lift: Cover the bowl with a cloth and let the dough rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in volume.
  5. Shape: Lightly oil your hands (to prevent the dough from sticking). Take a small ball of dough and stretch it with your fingers to form a flat circle. The edges should be a little thicker than the center.
  6. Fry: Gently place the dough into the hot oil. Fry until the bottom is nicely browned, then flip to cook the other side.
  7. Drain: Place the loaves on absorbent paper to remove excess oil.
  8. Serve: While it's hot, rub a cut garlic clove over the surface, then spread with crème fraîche and sprinkle generously with cheese
