Fried bread

Ingredients

For the dough:

  • Flour: 300g
  • Milk: 75ml (lukewarm)
  • Water: 75ml (lukewarm)
  • Sugar: 1 teaspoon
  • Salt: 1 teaspoon
  • Baker's yeast (instant): 1 teaspoon
  • Oil: For frying

Instructions

1. Mix the liquid base

In a bowl, mix the lukewarm milk and lukewarm water. Add the sugar and yeast. Stir gently and leave for a few minutes until the mixture becomes slightly foamy (this ensures that your yeast is active).

2. Form the dough

Add the flour and salt to the liquid mixture. Knead the dough until it is smooth and elastic. It should be flexible but not stick to your fingers. Cover the bowl with a clean cloth and let the dough rest in a warm place for about 1 hour (or until it has doubled in volume).

3. Shape the bread

Gently punch down the dough and spread it out on a lightly floured surface. Cut it into desired shapes — usually small rectangles or triangles. Shape the loaves to medium size so they are easy to handle and simple to top.

4. Frying

Heat the vegetable oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Gently place the pieces of dough into the hot oil.

  • The tip: Use a spoon to drizzle the top of the dough with hot oil while frying. This helps it “puff up” and create an air pocket inside.
  • Flip them once they are golden brown.

5. Drain and serve

Place the fried bread on absorbent paper to remove excess oil.
